National Book Award winning author Jason De León will be presenting at the Mitchell Auditorium on the campus of The College of St. Scholastica this Thursday, April 16th at 7:30pm.
"Jason is a big name," says Tim Lorek, Director of the Alworth Center at St. Scholastica. "This will be a great finale for our season on 'home'." The focus of the evening is De León's non-fiction work Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling. "This book... it's got a really important message."
The view on migration often highlights the border between the US and Mexico. In his book and presentation, De León is focused on the southern border of Mexico with Guatemala, and the migration routes originating from further south. While researching his book, De León lived with smugglers to document the work of those who guide migrants.
The event on Thursday is free. More information about the event and the Alworth Peace and Justice series can be found on the CSS website. The series continues in the fall, this time with presentations under the theme of 'Democracy in Action'. "We'll be planning a series of speakers who are focused on the difficult and daily work of democracy," says Lorek. "Not just in the United States, but around the world."
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
