"Cultural corridors in and of themselves are something that I think people might recognize intuitively but the name is not necessarily intuitive," says Andrea Crouse, the Community Placemaking Manager at Zeitgeist. "When we think about places that allow us to connect multiple distinct locations together across stories of the people who are living in an area, the history of it, that's what we see with cultural corridors."
On Wednesday, April 15th from noon until 2pm, Zeitgeist will host Building Great Places: Activating Cultural Corridors that Make Meaning of Place. The conversation about places goes beyond infrastructure. Through public art, historical signage, and other inviting aspects, spaces with meaning are popping up in the Duluth hillside. Ryan Smolar, Director of Placemaking US, will be the keynote speaker for the event, and Iranian artist Lili Razi will also be speaking about the Cultural Placemaking Mosaic project.
After the event, from 2:30-3:30pm, all are welcome to join others for a walk to continue the conversation. "We'll do a group walk down 1st Street and talk about how we can take what we just learned and apply it to a corridor that absolutely would benefit from some placemaking and glow-ups," says Crouse.
The event is free, but space is limited. To learn more and to register for the event, visit the Zeitgeist website.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
