On November 15th, the Great Hall at The Depot will be filled with young, artistic entrepreneurs displaying and selling their crafts. The 2nd Annual Teen Craft Sale runs from 11am-3pm this Saturday.
One of the artists, 14-year-old Lula, will be selling small clay figures, though there will be a wide variety of artistic offerings at the sale. "At the last craft fair I did notice a lot of people doing beading and painting," says Lula. "A lot of people crocheting... I do think that maybe a lot of stuff that has gone out of fashion is maybe coming back."
The idea for the sale began last year and was hosted in the downtown Duluth library. This year, more space was needed. "Our first one was at the library in our Green Room, which is not very big. We only had room for about sixteen tables and we filled them up very quickly," says Heidi Harrison, Senior Library Technicial in Youth Services at the Duluth Public Library.
And the purpose of the Teen Craft Sale goes beyond art. "Another element to the craft sale is to introduce basic entrepreneurial skills to teens," says Nelle Rhicard with Duluth Workforce Development. "Anywhere from how do you price, to how do you track your profits and losses, how do you know when it's time to tax."
The event will feature work by local artists ranging from 11-19 years old. More information about the Teen Craft Sale can be found online.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
