Minnesota author, musician and naturalist Douglas Wood remembers the first moment that he felt the pull of nature. "My grandmother and my granddad and me being in a rowboat on a tiny pond in southern Illinois," says Wood. "That's really where everything became magical for me." Since then, Wood's life has been an exploration of the outdoors, music and words.
Perhaps best known for his book Old Turtle, Wood is also the author of memoirs and he's a life-long musician, performing and recording songs with a focus on our natural world. "My mother and dad were both musicians," says Wood of his origins with music. "I was in that house, so there was music everywhere... but I also had ADHD and dyslexia... it made it very hard to read music." Despite this, he started writing songs within a few weeks of having been gifted a 12-string guitar.
Douglas Wood's visit to the Northland this week includes a free evening of stories and songs at the Hermantown YMCA from 6-7pm on Thursday, November 6th, as well as a concert on Friday, November 7th starting at 7pm at the County Seat Theater in Cloquet. Visit the County Seat Theater website for tickets to Friday's performance.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
