Ben Mason is the Leave No Trace Coordinator with the Superior Hiking Trail. Considering the SHT's hundreds of miles of trail, keeping it clean isn't a one-person job.
Recently, the organization enlisted a favorite cryptid to help get the message of stewardship out to trail users. "We put me in the Bigfoot costume," says Mason. "We use Bigfoot to try and create videos that could engage people and get people to pay attention. I think sometimes education can be tedious to do, and I think humor is one great thing to incorporate into that."
Packing out trash and appropriately dealing with human waste are just a couple of ways to care for the trails. If you're looking for more opportunities to get involved with the Superior Hiking Trail, information can be found on the organization's website. A variety of videos featuring sasquatch can be found on the hiking trail's social media.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
