The summer of 2025 is a busy one for Family Freedom Center. Their calendar of events continues on July 25th with the second Unapologetically African event, which is geared toward everyone with an interest in culture and community. "While we were created with the needs and aspirations of black and brown families in mind, our programs are built for the entire community," says Jacob Bell, CEO and Executive Director for Family Freedom Center. "We welcome everybody to come out to all of our programs."
On July 25th, beginning at 2pm at Washington Center in Duluth, all are welcome to partake in food, language lessons, and conversation about African culture. "One of the goals is to break stereotypes about Africa," says Dr. Ariri Onchwari who notes that often times, images and presentations of Africa are devoid of accuracy. "It's a very diverse place with a wide range of things going on, culture, language, and different ways of living."
Although the event is geared toward families and youths, learning opportunities are for everyone. "I've learned so much just being able to sit in [Dr. Onchwari's] classes with the kids," says Tim Squalls, Outreach Coordinator with Family Freedom Center. "The youth get it from a young age, but to me, the things that she's teaching, they're a reset about things I didn't know about culture... it resonates with my spirit."
More information about the Unapologetically African event can be found on the Family Freedom Center Facebook page. The final Unapologetically African event of the summer will happen on August 29th.
