When posed with starting a club, Jade Thompson and Dana Engstrom were on the same page. "Immediately Dana and I were both like, well, Feminist Horror Movie Club - let's figure it out."

Since May 3rd, Thompson and Engstrom have been showing films and hosting discussions at Waterstop (20 N 2nd Ave East in Duluth) every first and third Saturday beginning at 7pm. "There are so many topics that can be applied to horror in feminism specifically," says Engstrom.

The next film (showing on July 5th) is 1942's Cat People in which certain people transform into cats when aroused. "Women - more likely than not - didn't have access to the vocabulary to identify these fears and these feelings," says Thompson. "Cat People has a lot to do with repressed sexuality, and in 1942, women need to fit into one of the architypes; you are a young schoolgirl, you are a mother, you are an older woman... society won't accept a woman who's openly showing sexuality."

More info about the Femme Frights Film Club can be found on Instagram and on the Waterstop website.

You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
