"I was just looking for lesson ideas," says artist Bud Bullivant regarding his wire work. The former teacher turned an idea for class into a creative endeavor that will be on display at this year's Park Point Art Fair.
Bullivant's work is likened to pencil drawings wherein the artist never lets the lead leave the paper, thus creating a single-line drawing. In Bullivant's work, the lead is traded for wire. Inspiration was taken from famed artist Alexander Calder who used to create three dimensional portraits of friends with loose wire and a pair of pliers. Bullivant now utilizes a similar technique to create 3-D animals.
Much like a knitter drawing from a ball of yarn, Bullivant pulls wire from a 100-pound roll until the work is complete. "I don't cut the wire until I'm pretty sure I know how much I'm going to need."
Bullivant's work can be seen at the Park Point Art Fair on June 28th and 29th from 10am-5pm and also online at Wired by Bud.
