Since 1987, Brian Matuszak has been performing sketch comedy. Now the Executive Producer of Rubber Chicken Theater, Matuszak and a cast of comedic veterans are prepping for their annual holiday show.
This year's topical year-end show (titled A Christmas Comedy Carol or How I Learned to Stop Scrooging and Keep Laughing) recaps local events through humorous sketches and music. "We open the show usually with Christmas carol parodies," says Matuszak. The process of creating the show typically begins in October with writing, before moving into rehearsals. "The last couple weeks, it all comes together."
Matuszak understands that last-minute current events worthy of parody happen, and changing the show as opening night nears is a possibility. A parody tune about Jim Carlson receiving clemency is one topic that Matuszak was still working on as of this interview.
The annual holiday revue hits the stage at Studio 4 at the Depot in downtown Duluth on December 20th, 21st, 27th and 28th. On December 31st, the troupe presents New Year's Cluckin' Eve at 7:30pm. For more information and for tickets, visit the Rubber Chicken Theater website.
