Community Connection: Forging with Ezra Schomberg

Introduced to The Lord of the Rings at a young age, it didn’t take long for then 8-year-old Ezra Schomberg to start creating his own weaponry with his 11-year-old sister. ”We found some pipes and we said 'let's put these in the fire as long as we can and still hold onto them.'" Schomberg is now 19 and has refined his process.

Though he considers himself to be more a bladesmith than a blacksmith, Schomberg spends significant time creating works among the Duluth Forging Community. Teaching the craft is also a big part of his passion “I doubt I'd do quite as much if I wasn't a teacher,” says Schomberg. "I teach blacksmithing and that... is the most enjoyable part of it."

Is this a living? “Probably not," says Schomberg. "It doesn't pay bills.” But it does have it’s moments. “Pour fifty, sixty, seventy hours into a blade... and then have somebody buy it. That's the most gratifying thing, having somebody pick up the sword and say 'I want this.'”

Luke Moravec is the host for Northland Morning on The North 103.3. He’s also a local actor, musician and writer. He loves puzzles, riddles and fun mysteries.
