Homegrown Live from Studio A: New Salty Dog

A 5-piece band performs in a TV studio with bright lights overhead.
Christine Dean
New Salty Dog performs in the studios of PBS North

Brothers Jacob and Owen Mahon are the core of this band, which also currently features Calvin "Calzone" Lund on bass, Sam Deters on guitar, and Bryan “Lefty” Johnson on percussion. Recently their regular Highkey Monday shows have made the first day of the work week the hottest night of the week for music in the Twin Ports, with groove-heavy sets that often feature other local musicians sitting in. They’ve recently released a live album recorded at one of those shows, and have another release due out on May 19th, plus a studio album recorded at Sparta Sound in the works. They perform at Duluth’s Homegrown Music Festival on Thursday, May 4 at the Tower Avenue Tavern; we got a preview when they joined us in the studio on April 28, 2023. This session also will be featured on PBS North television as part of The North 103.3’s Homegrown Music Tune Up which will air at 9pm on April 28 and Saturday, April 29 at 11pm.
