Investing in happy childhood is of particular interest for Commissioner Ashley Grimm. "A kid is a kid wherever they are in St. Louis county," says Grimm, one of seven commissioners for the county.
Grimm's efforts thus far have included make a five million dollar investment in schools across the county. Early signs indicate that this investment has put schools on track to meet desired benchmarks.
For Grimm, her role is about more than buying equipment and taking care of roads. "That stuff is important, but we really have to rethink what we are to families."
On a separate issue, the immediate future brings the potential for big change. "One of the most exciting things for me coming up is a vote on the healthcare happening in our jail." Currently, a for-profit company is charged with providing healthcare for the county jail. Movement on this issue is expected today.
