Duluth continues to recover from Thursday night's destructive storms, widespread power outages, and high temperatures.
UMD sent out an alert around 6 this morning that, due to the continued power outage, campus will again be closed for today. KUMD will remain off the air until power is restored to campus.
With today's high expected to be 90 degrees, the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center is once again acting as a cooling center from 10am-10pm today. DTA buses are offering free rides to the DECC. Find more information here.
The Duluth YMCA has also announced that it is open to the public for "a warm shower, workout , and free wi-fi" while the power outage continues.
The City of Duluth reports that Duluth's water system is now fully operational and yesterday's request for residents to conserve water has been rescinded.
Although yesterday Minnesota Power announced that some of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in Duluth may have to wait 3-4 days for power to be restored, they have been working steadily and provided this update today on their Facebook page:
Crews have restored power to thousands more over the past several hours; 27,674 remain without power (down from 46K without power at height of the storm) in Duluth and surrounding areas, Brainerd/Nisswa, Walker and Soudan. About 90 lineworkers are now in the field working hard to clear trees from lines, replace broken power poles and restore neighborhoods hardest hit. We appreciate your patience and understanding and remind you stay away from downed lines and poles.
The City of Duluth has provided this update on cleanup from storm damage:
The City Street Mainenance crews continue to clear debris from residential streets and the City is working to determine debris collection options which will be announced once details are confirmed. ...If there are any remaining areas with downed trees blocking city streets or sidewalks, residents can call (218) 730-4357 to report the location. The City urges residents to use caution in areas with downed trees and power lines.
