Northland a "perfect storm" for elder abuse

HelpGuide.org

We're already getting the idea that the "golden years," aren't quite so golden.  Increasing health care costs, rising prescription medication costs, people lingering for years with dementia - that's bad enough.

But here's an even uglier chapter: elder abuse.  Fraud, financial exploitation, mental, psychological and or physical violence.

Why?  Much of the nation's wealth is held by people over 60.

Who's doing it?  The ugliest part of all: family.

If you are concerned that you or someone you know may be the victim of elder abuse, in Minnesota, call the Minnesota Adult Abuse Reporting Center at (844)880-1574.  In Douglas County,  Wisconsin, call Adult Protective Services at (715) 395-1304.

To learn more about how you can protect yourself or a loved one, to learn about indicators of possible elder abuse or to get more information about this topic, you can check out these online sources:

Lisa Johnson started her broadcast career anchoring the television news at her high school and spinning country music at KWWK/KOLM Radio in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a reporter and news anchor at KTHI in Fargo, ND (not to mention the host of a children's program called "Lisa's Lane") and a radio reporter and anchor in Moorhead, Bismarck, Wahpeton and Fergus Falls.Since 1991, she has hosted Northland Morning on KUMD. One of the best parts of her job includes "paying it forward" by mentoring upcoming journalists and broadcasters on the student news team that helps produce Northland Morning. She also loves introducing the different people she meets in her job to one another, helping to forge new "community connections" and partnerships.Lisa has amassed a book collection weighing over two tons, and she enjoys reading, photography, volunteering with Animal Allies Humane Society and fantasizing about farmland. She goes to bed at 8pm, long before her daughter, two cats, or three dogs.
