Backyard Almanac: Migration, Leaves, and Naming the Saw-whet Owl

The visual landscape is changing significantly from day to day as September gives way to October. The usual marquee autumn sights of leaves and migrations are in full swing, but the less heralded topics like snakes, spider webs, owls, and bats (perhaps heralding the spooky season) are also plenty visible.

For anyone who's been keeping an eye open at Hawk Ridge, saw-whet owls are a frequent sight. This adorable little critter got named by lumberjacks when the call of the saw-whet owl reminded them of a sawblade being sharpened.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.

Luke Moravec is the host for Northland Morning on The North 103.3. He’s also a local actor, musician and writer. He loves puzzles, riddles and fun mysteries.
