Amid the many sights of Awesome August, perhaps none is more abundant at its peak than goldenrod. Along with other late-summer wildflowers, goldenrod can be seen in many open fields along the roadside.

Overhead, migration is gearing up. Raptors are starting to tick up in numbers, and the folks at Hawk Ridge have their eyes open.

And if you're looking for company, head out into the woods where you'll likely be greeted by tree flogs, and if you're lucky, you might spot a buck. Presently many of the male deer are developing velvety antlers.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.

Luke Moravec is the host for Northland Morning on The North 103.3. He’s also a local actor, musician and writer. He loves puzzles, riddles and fun mysteries.
