Backyard Almanac: Who Says August is Autumn?

For Larry Weber, who might just be August's number one fan, the second half of this month is more awesome than the first half.

As August rolls along, birders are keeping their eyes out for early migrants. Hawk Ridge is a focal point for the ornithological world - and in the world of ornithology August is considered an autumn month. Raptors will start being counted at the Ridge, while around the neighborhood, Warblers are gearing up for migration as well.

Frogs, insects, and lots of summer wildflowers are also on the list of what to expect in this second half of Awesome August. But something that might not be in the mix are mushrooms. Without precipitation, there's just not a lot of mushroom hunting to be done.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.

Luke Moravec is the host for Northland Morning on The North 103.3. He’s also a local actor, musician and writer. He loves puzzles, riddles and fun mysteries.
