Backyard Almanac: A Preview of Awesome August

With July almost behind us, it's clear that we had plenty of heat, and not nearly enough rain. Whatever descriptive words might be applied to the month that's been, Larry Weber has one word to sum up the month ahead: awesome.

"Awesome August" is a brilliant time for a lot of long-lasting wildflowers, spiders and their webs are often at their best, a variety of berries will be nearing their peak, and some of the most unique mushrooms can be found on the ground. One mushroom in particular can be broken open to reveal a white inside - but if you wait just a moment, the white quickly turns to blue.

And don't look now, but some birds are already staging themselves for migration. But those are just the early birds; there's plenty of summer still to go, and lots to appreciate about the season.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
