During the summer, the Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) hosts a series of free events aboard the Blue Heron, a research vessel used for Great Lakes research.
The first event of the summer takes place from 11am-3pm on Friday, June 26th with guided tours by crew members and freshwater research displays. At 1:30pm, Catherine O'Reilly, PhD and Director of the Large Lakes Observatory, will present “Underwater Soundscapes”. On that day, the ship can be found docked at 800 W. Railroad Street at Pier B Resort.
On July 17th, LLO invites authors aboard with the Duluth Public Library's "Libraries Love Lakes" event. Along with tours and displays, the Blue Heron will also host author Alex Messenger at 11:30am for a conversation about his latest book The Ice on the Lake and his 2019 book The Twenty-Ninth Day. Author Margi Preus will also be aboard for the Enchantment Lake Book Club at 1:30pm (registration for the event with Margi is required.) On July 17th, the boat will be near the Great Lakes Aquarium at 353 Harbor Drive.
