Earth's Greatest Enemy, a new documentary by filmmaker Abby Martin, takes a hard look at the relationship between the US military and the environment. "I kept hearing the statistic that the US military was the largest institutional polluter in the world - larger than 140 countries," says Martin. This stat comes from the amount of oil purchased on paper by the military alone.
Martin traveled the world to gather footage and information for the new documentary. In a variety of locations, like Guam, Japan, Alaska and Hawaii, Martin spoke with people about struggles and resistance to military expansion. The US has over 800 military bases across the globe, having an impact on the environment, water quality, and more.
A free local screening of the film (which is touring the world) will take place at 10am on Saturday, February 7th at The West Theatre in Duluth. To learn more about Earth's Greatest Enemy and to see the trailer, visit the film's website. "It is becoming very urgent. We're seeing it, clear as day," says Martin about the military's negative environmental impact. "This movie is one tool in the arsenal."
You can hear Green Visions at 8:20am every Wednesday on Northland Morning.
