Backyard Almanac: Short Days and Counting Birds

"Normal" doesn't mean too much to December 2025. Temps have been frequently below zero and high temps haven't gotten out of the 20s. The weekend ahead doesn't seem to offer any respite from the cold temps and wind.

Amid the dark days, there are things to look forward to - and to look for. Christmas Bird Counts are beginning in the middle of the month. These counts have been happening annually since 1900. Birdwatchers will be on the lookout for a variety of different species in order to gather data and an understanding of what birds are spending their winters in the Northland.

Of course, if you are going out to count the birds, bundle up - even if December veers back to average temperatures, it'll still be plenty cold.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.

Luke Moravec is the host for Northland Morning on The North 103.3. He’s also a local actor, musician and writer. He loves puzzles, riddles and fun mysteries.
