Tips for Hardy Gardeners: Prepping for Winter and Protecting Young Trees

Deer, rabbits and mice probably don't sound like predators - but that all depends on the prey.

Now is the time to take action and protect any young trees on your property. For Tom Kasper, a dollar-worth of tree wrap (that can be purchased at just about any hardware store) is a great insurance investment to protect trees during the cold months. When left exposed, the bark of trees as young as 5-7 years old will be an attractive treat to foraging animals.

But not all actions right now are to ward off animals. Consider keeping a few of the plants that you might normally want to rake away. Some plant stalks can actually provide habitat for insects that are looking for a warm place to hibernate as the temps drop.

You can hear Tips for Hardy Gardeners every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
