Backyard Almanac: Migration Continues in a Dry October

There's still plenty of movement in the air. Raptors, songbirds and waterfowl are all on the move. Most of the birds making their way south can be spotted during the day, but keep your eyes and ears peeled at night too. Saw-whet owls migrate through the region under the cover of darkness.

Perhaps even more noteworthy than the massive number of migrants is the scant amount of precipitation. The first half of October was a dry one, with most areas of the Northland measuring only about 0.3 inches of precipitation. With the back half of the month to go, there's still a chance to average out the monthly rainfall... or maybe even snowfall.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
