Backyard Almanac: Spiders and Snakes!

The spooky time of the year is approaching, but that's not necessarily why we're seeing more creepy critters.

Northland snakes are on the move - not with the intention of giving you a fright - but rather because it's their time to migrate. Keep your eyes on the ground when walking along rural roads or on trails in the woods. It's one of the best times of the year to spot the few varieties of snakes that we have here in the Northland.

Spiders are moving too, but not in their traditional manner. In autumn, some arachnids take to the skies. By sending out a thread of webbing, small spiders will ride the wind and disperse themselves. And with additional leaf drop just ahead, spotting these floating spiders will become more apparent.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
