Backyard Almanac: A Final Burst of Summer

Vegetation of all kinds is reaching its peak. Mid-August means that plants are at their most voluminous. In just a few short weeks, these robust vistas will begin to brown and wilt with the coming of autumn.

One sure sign of the changing seasons is the lively nature of Hawk Ridge in Duluth. The count has begun as sharp-shinned hawks are being spotted making their migratory moves.

And if you're looking for more signs of the changing seasons, look no further than the artwork of elementary school students. The things that youngsters pick up off the ground and subsequently glue to construction paper can prove to be an unorthodox, but surprisingly accurate way to track phenology.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
