Migration, wildflowers, butterflies, and new growth. It comes with the territory in these final days of May.
The time for seeing certain wildflowers is now. In the coming days, the flowers requiring an abundance of sunlight will subside, giving way to those that can thrive in the shade. Found in the shade are Baneberry, Star Flower, Columbine, and Blue Bead Lily. For Larry Weber, the one he's watching for is the Yellow Lady Slipper Orchid. "I have not seen them open that bud yet, but I suspect it will be very soon."
Ferns are also erupting. The fiddlehead stage has come and gone, making it easy to imagine how abundant the forest floor covering will be as the summer progresses.
Blue, white, and yellow butterflies are all active right now. More specifically they are known as Spring Azure, Cabbage White and Sulphur. It might still be early for Monarchs, but other winged creatures are in abundance. Dragonflies are flitting about... and so are the mosquitos.
