As we make our way to a hopefully a-May-zing May, let's step back and talk about the absolutely average April we had this past year.
Our resident expert Larry Weber says that the statistics of monthly temperature averages almost never happen. April 2025 was why we say "almost". The average temperature for the month was 39°F, just under the normal average of 39.5°F. Precipitation was similar, with a total of 2.65 inches, slightly above the normal of 2.55 inches. Now that we've entered May, things are looking up (especially regarding our thermometers). The average temperature for May is around 52°F, a big jump from April.
The birds continue their trek back to the Northland, with songbirds expected to be the big migrants in May. Mammels have started to come into their own, with the first sighting of bats occurring over the past week. Insects continue to come back out for the pollution season, with butterflies and bumblebees making their way out into the fresh spring air. Fortunately, the mosquitos haven't been spotted yet, though that's sure to change over the next couple weeks.
