Backyard Almanac: Daylight and Animal sightings on the Rise

We've reached the halfway point in April and so far, the temperature has been about normal for the month. April's warmest day so far topped 62, and precipitation is down for the month, though snow is above normal. Even so, it could be time to finally pack your snow gear away and breakout the spring wardrobe.

The ice and snow have been rapidly melting over the past week, in large part due to the amount of sun we are getting. The 18th is the first day we should see sunsets as late as 8:00pm, and next week we will mark 14 hours of daylight. On the flip side, the moon is in is waning gibbous phase.

While bald eagles topped the March migration count, rising to over 4000 last week, the new April count champions are the turkey vultures. Water birds and songbirds continue their return to the Northland, with more and more coming every day.

In terms of non-avion animals, the first frogs have started to call. Chipmunks and beavers are out and about and getting ready for the spring. Butterflies and bumblebees are expected to make an appearance soon as the trees and flowers begin to bloom.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
