Backyard Almanac: The Mishmash Month of March

With February coming to an end, we can look back with relief as winter comes to an end. Our doyen naturalist Larry Weber says that this winter was below average in temperature, precipitation, and snowfall. As March begins, Weber says the temperatures are expected to swing up and down.

In the world of critters, the spring raptor count has begun at Enger Tower. We have a major movement of bald eagles this year, so expect to see our newly named national bird in great numbers. As the temperatures increase, so too does the amount of animal activity. Songbirds are coming out in droves, as well as the bard owls and blue jays. Mammal tracks are also abundant, and with the fresh snow, not hard to find.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
