Backyard Almanac: Temperatures Rising and Animals Waking

Temperatures continue to stay chilly in the Northland as February starts to draw to a close. Naturalist Larry Weber says that there have been 15 days this month so far that have been 0°F or colder, which is above average for the year. Snowfall also stays ahead of average with 16" of snow in February compared to just 9" average.

While the owls continue their irruption, the big birding news shifts to their smaller, backyard-bird-feeder cousins: finches. Finches are becoming abundant as we get closer to spring which makes for great bird watching. Finally, the mammals are becoming active and - as the temperatures rise - awake. Watch out for the skunks.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
