While tempting the weather in the Northland is a meteorological folly, it is getting to that time of year to at least think about moving from snow shovel to garden hose.
Seed catalogs are sprouting up in people's mailboxes, offering gardeners a chance to peruse for their upcoming garden. Master gardener Tom Kasper says that these catalogs are a favorite of gardeners and can be the harbinger of the gardening season.
"It's almost like the Victoria's Secret catalog for gardeners," said Kasper. "Years ago, many of these seed companies thought 'You know, we're gonna save some money and go to digital and people can just download our catalog and look at it at their own leisure on their computers and things.' And it just did not work out. Sales dropped."
These catalogs also provide horticulturists a chance to learn about which plants work best in the northern soil. Kasper says that for this, there is one vegetable above the rest.
"If you're looking for the best nutrient value in a vegetable crop that we can grow, broccoli is it," said Kasper.
