Snow has been sparse thus far in 2025, but even a dusting can be helpful in identifying the animals that are staying active in the wintertime. January has yet to bring even an inch of snowfall to the Northland, but what is here is enough for spotting tracks.

Looking skyward, Christmas Bird Counts are wrapped up, and for Carlton County there were some bird sightings that went against expectations. A large number of White-winged Crossbills were spotted, as were a grouping of Black-billed Magpies.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
