Backyard Almanac: Getting Out in the Cold

Ready or not, winter has arrived.

The recent frigid temps have brought December's average temperature down to below average. Also below average is the snowfall. Typically, at this point there is about 2 feet on the ground.

For adventuress individuals like Larry Weber, now is the perfect time to get outside. There are plenty of animal tracks to take in, lots of birds to keep an eye out for (especially with Christmas Bird Counts looming) and some non-hibernating squirrels to feed. In order to feed the flying squirrels while avoiding having the meal ransacked by other squirrels, put out their food at dusk.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
