Backyard Almanac: Tracks in the Snow

Unlike last winter, this year we've got some snow on the ground. That snow has led to plenty of animal tracks. Larry Weber has been spotting a few animals wandering in the early-winter woods, but far more tracks indicating an active landscape.

Look higher up and you'll see red polls and crossbills (both of which are hunkering down for a Northland winter), as well as a few larger migratory birds still working their way south.

And with the winter solstice still a few weeks away, it might be surprising to know that the earliest sunsets are happening right now. Starting in a few days, sunsets will start getting later, but that will be combined with an even later sunrise - so the shortest day is still to come.

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
