Backyard Almanac: Awesome August at an End

"It lived up to its name," says Larry Weber of Awesome August which comes to a close this weekend.

Summer still has a few weeks left, even if the signs of its annual demise are all around. The days are becoming noticeably shorter, with sunsets now happening before 8pm and sunrises not arriving until after 6:30am. The raptors are showing up in greater numbers in the Northland, particularly at Hawk Ridge. Daily raptor counts have already been numbering in the tens of thousands.

And maybe the one late summer sight stirring up the most excitement for Larry Weber is the goldenrod. This roadside plant can be seen in great abundance across the state right now. "They're filled with so much activity," says Weber who notes that various species of insects are drawn to the plant. "They are worth getting out to take a look at."

You can hear Backyard Almanac every Friday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
