Astro Bob's Backyard Astronomy: The Milky Way, and the return of the Northern Lights

The Aurora Borealis above two tall fir trees
Chris Harwood
Taken by Chris Harwood on May 11th at 1:10 am with an iPhone 11 using a 10-second exposure. To the naked eye the pink and red colors were only faintly visible, but a longer exposure time helped bring those out.

Bob King offers a great smart-phone camera tip for longer nighttime-exposures

The Northern Lights will be returning in the next week or two. The sunspot activity that caused them to appear back on May 10th and 11th is still happening; as that side of the sun (where the sunspot activity is occurring) rotates back around to face the Earth, they may reappear again in the coming days. The Milky Way will also be more visible in the next week or two as the Moon wanes to the new moon phase. And the Moon and Mars will be in conjunction on the morning of May 31st, best viewed prior to sunrise.

Trying to catch a pic or two with your smartphone? Bob King advises seeing if you can mount your smartphone onto a tripod. In the darker light, that stability might allow your smartphone to automatically extend its exposure time to as much as 30-seconds, giving you a great chance to capture more light, color, and detail of these events!

Chris Harwood is The North 1033’s Production Director and (acting) Program Director, a morning/daytime host, and the host of Soul Village. He is also a musician, a music historian, an audio engineer, and an avid record collector.
