Set the alarm, bundle up, and hope for clear skies. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower is on its way.
From roughly 3-4:30am on May 5th and 6th, stargazers can watch the Eta Aquariid meteor shower; so named due to its visual source near the star Eta in the constellation Aquarius. The sand-sized meteoroids streaming from Haley's comet will hit Earth's atmosphere at an incredible velocity, creating brief streaks across the sky.
If you're going to hunker down for a viewing, be sure to prep for the chilliness. "I always recommend to wear warm clothing," says Bob King. "You're very inactive, you're just out on a lawn chair."
You can hear Astro Bob's Backyard Astronomy every other Tuesday at 8:20am on Northland Morning.
