Green Visions: Green Updates for Port of Entry at Grand Portage

A new energy-efficient border crossing facility is in the works for the Grand Portage Port of Entry. The $3.4 billion bipartisan infrastructure law has made way for such renovations, but the way forward is a slow and considered one.

"There are going to be more lanes for traffic than there used to be, there's going to be larger buildings than there used to be to meet current needs," says John Caswell, director of design and construction with the General Services Administration (GSA) Great Lakes Region 5. A public meeting to present the project and get community feedback was held on October 5th in Grand Portage. "We're trying to take this more from just building a building into building a building that's part of a community."

The targeted improvements aim to minimize wait times for idling cars, create a net-zero structure, and more while respecting the land and the community. Construction is not set to begin until 2025, with completion predicted to be in 2029. For more information and the latest updates visit the GSA website.
