Using technology to help the planet is nothing new, but now it can be in the palm of your hand.
The GetGreen App is a response to the Duluth Citizen’s Climate Action Plan; a comprehensive plan to further reduce the community's carbon emissions. “The plan is really cool,” says Reese Van Houten, the Community Communications Coordinator for Eco3. “It features actions that citizens can take to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions.” Taking electric public transportation, composting, eating locally, and other actions can be tracked on the app.
As with many new apps, GetGreen has a gamified element to hook users to achieve specific goals that are detailed in the Climate Action Plan. “When users complete actions they earn leaves,” says Van Houten. "Leaves then result in a direct investment in the Duluth community."
The app is also geared toward supporting the expansion of micro-mobility hubs. The pilot hub will be located in Lincoln Park. "[The Hub] includes a variety of traditional bikes, e-bikes, and unique mobility devices," says Van Houten. "The goal is to increase transportation access."
