The Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula)

Research that hopes to reveal more about the life of this iconic bird.

Little is known about the annual cycle of the northern hawk owl, especially during the winter months. Using cutting-edge telemetry methods, researchers at the University of Minnesota Duluth are hoping to change that.

KUMD talks with UMD Masters student Hannah Toutonghi about the Northern Hawk Owl Project and what the research hopes to reveal about the owl's migration, diet, and reproductive patterns, and how it may be affected by ongoing climate change.
