As Christmas is to Duluth, Halloween is to Superior.
"Hammond Avenue now gets blocked off... no traffic on Halloween," says Dan Kittelson about Superior's commitment to the holiday. For the past seventeen years, Kittelson has added to the spirit by transforming his property at 1701 Hammond Avenue in Superior into The Massacre on Hammond, a free admission haunted walk.
This year's western ghost town theme is open for two more days. On Thursday, October 30th, patrons will be lining up for a scare from 7-10pm. On Halloween, the site transforms into a "low scare" event from 4-6pm before ratcheting up the fear again from 7-10pm.
Although the event is free, The Massacre on Hammond has persisted through donations, but not just the monetary kind. "If people want to donate Halloween stuff to be used - we can always use that," says collaborator Jerry Osgan. "Mannequins, body parts - feel free to donate it."
More info can be found The Massacre on Hammond's Facebook page.
You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
