"How do you get a sense of community when you don't fit in with your community?" asks playwright Kevin Kling.
The answer to that question comes when a Grasshopper and a Largroff set off on a whimsical adventure in Invisible Fences, a theatrical production on stage now at Zeitgeist in downtown Duluth. The Grasshopper and mythical Largroff are played by Kling and songwriter Gaelynn Lea. The two are also co-writers of the project which serves to explore the bigger questions around Disability Culture.
The fairytale-esque journey of the two kindred woodland characters is elevated by Lea's original songs. "Gaelyn has these songs that are so moving and beautiful... and represent the lives of all of us trying to fit into this world that wasn't created for us," says Kling.
The play also includes area musician George Ellsworth on guitar and vocals. Additionally, Ellsworth plays the narrator and a handful of dynamic secondary characters.
Invisible Fences will be running through November 23rd at Zeitgeist. Each production includes ASL interpretation and supertitles. Tickets are available on the Zeitgeist website.
