"I think that the past is always with us in the present in the same way that the present is always with us in the future," says Marcie R. Rendon, author of Anishinaabe Songs for a New Millennium.
Rendon's latest collection of poetry and songs connects the ancient and the modern. The first half of the book is dedicated to "Dream Songs," a reference to stories deriving from dreams for Anishinaabe people. Each poem within the first section is its own, but there remains a connectivity and fluid arrangement throughout giving the presentation a sweeping wholeness.
The second half of the book is comprised of songs for operas, choirs and plays. Rendon has worked with many musicians over the years to merge her words with western instrumentation.
Rendon will be visiting the Northland in the coming days. On September 6th, she'll be at Fitger's Bookstore from 6-8pm, on September 7th, she'll be visiting Drury Lane in Grand Marais from 6-7:30pm, and on September 8th she can be found at Zenith bookstore from 4-5:30pm. The book can also be purchase via the University of Minnesota Press website.
