Performances of The Nutcracker have become an annual holiday tradition around the globe. Here in the Twin Ports, the Minnesota Ballet offers patrons the opportunity to experience the classic tale under a local lens.
For Karl von Rabenau, the Artistic Director for the Minnesota Ballet, The Nutcracker is a malleable story. In this sense, Tchaikovsky gets a comparison to the Bard of Avon. "You don't always see a Shakespearean play produced as it was originally performed," says von Rabenau. "I think The Nutcracker affords us that opportunity as well." The Minnesota Ballet version of the story is set in the historic Duluth Depot and incorporates nods to the industry of the area, while maintaining many iconic and traditional moments and characters.
There will be three performances of The Nutcracker this weekend at the DECC. The curtain goes up on Friday, December 8th and Saturday, December 9th at 7pm, and Sunday, December 10th at 3pm. For tickets, visit the DECC online or call the Minnesota Ballet at 218-733-7570.
