MN Reads: "Surface Displacements" by Sheila Packa

For Sheila Packa, the title of her latest book of poems Surface Displacements speaks to the changing landscape of the Iron Range, the lives and journeys of immigrants, and much more.

"The theme of the book... is about excavations and landscape," says Packa. "When I think about the level of extraction in mining it really gives me pause to think about what's in the water, are we being careful about the economic development."

Packa grew up speaking Finnish and included several poems in this collection that incorporate Finnish words. "It was sort of a soothing thing to do," says Packa. "All of us have interesting backgrounds."

The book is a finalist for the Minnesota Book Award in the Poetry category. Surface Displacements can be purchased at Zenith Bookstore in Duluth or via Packa's website.
