Art from adversity. One might say that Rubber Chicken Theater faced that when their usual venue for their annual holiday show fell through. “Fitger's is doing a fantastic job down there,” says Brian Matuszak of the Spirit of the North Theater in the Fitger's complex. The space has been renovated to better suit theatrical productions. However, as a result of its new allure the space wasn't as free as usual. The Rubber Chicken Holiday Show was nearly without a venue.
"I can get in on New Year's Eve," says Matuszak. In a reversal of the usual form, instead of closing their holiday show on December 31st, they're opening. Additional shows are going to be later in January. "We're kind of flipping it." And the peculiarities don't end with a non-traditional opening night. The venue for the January shows is the Great Lakes Aquarium.
For Matuszak, the holiday show is a chance to look back at the year and laugh. "I love to create, I love to write." And Rubber Chicken Theater has a lot of fun with original sketches and broad comedy that lean on local of events from the past year. Expect big expressions, lots of mugging, and plenty of unique takes on familiar news stories and locales.
