St. Louis County Historical Society Centennial Celebration

Curator Erin Hicks has only been with the St. Louis County Historical Society for a few months. Executive Director Jo Ann Coombe has only a few months left with the society before retirement. In this brief overlap, they’re working together to celebrate a centennial.

On Friday, September 16th from 4-9pm the St. Louis County Historical Society is inviting the public to a free event at the Depot in Duluth for appetizers, music, and to celebrate 100 years of the society's existence. The musical acts include Laura Velvet and the Bookhouse Boys and Steve Solkela's one-man band. The evening is hosted by Ken Bueller.

“It’ll kind of function like an open house," says Hicks. "Visitors will be able to see artifacts on view that normally aren’t exhibited.” Items from the American Indian collection and the military collection will be on display, as well as a gown worn by Polly Peterson - Miss Minnesota, 1981.

"It's a challenge," says Coombe of her work. ”This is a big county.” Though St. Louis county is geographically bigger than some US states, Coombe continually cites the support from local government and the community. "Our board of governors is active... we've always enjoyed the support."
