Annie discusses a few events of interest this week:
On Wednesday, January 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the Duluth Art Institute is holding its annual Member Meeting at the Lincoln , although the general public is invited to attend. Minneapolis artist and writer Andy Sturdevant will be the featured speaker. His first book, Potluck Supper with Meeting to Follow, was published by Coffee House Press in 2013. In honor of his book, the Institute welcomes attendees to bring their own hot dish to pass.
On Thursday, January 19 from 5 to 7 pm, the City of Duluth will hold a public celebration to reveal its Arts & Culture Plan for 2017.
Also on Thursday from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Tweed Museum at UMD, Dr. Jamie Ratliff (UMD Assistant Prof. of Art) will present a talk, "Un-Typing Casta: The Role of Images in Constructing and Deconstructing Racism." She is the curator of the Un-Typing Casta exhibit currently on display at the Tweed Museum.
Annie also gives a shout out to Duluth artist Kay Kurt, whose 50 year career as a large-scale pop artist is being given a retrospective exhibit from now until February 16 at Albertz Benda in New York City. A New York Times article was published last Friday about the exhibit.
