Community Connection: New Duluth Shelter Aims to Lift Up Homeless Youth

"Homelessness is one of the greatest political and economic and moral failures of our country," says Joel Kilgour with the Stepping On Up initiative. "We've been facing an epidemic of homelessness since the 1980s that has really reached a boiling point."

In Duluth, the lack of affordable housing and need for support has led 14 area non-profits to take a proactive approach to youth experiencing homelessness. Between Lutheran Social Service, CHUM, Peace Church, and others, a new shelter for youths is set to open very soon.

The goals of the shelter go beyond the necessities. "It's much more than just a safe place for them to stay for one night," says Dawn Shykes from Lutheran Social Service. "We're really focusing on some core areas for them that include employment, education, physical health and wellbeing, mental health and wellbeing."

Community members looking to contribute can volunteer or donate financially at the Stepping On Up website. Youths in need of housing are encouraged to call 218-391-5145.

You can hear Community Connection every Tuesday and Thursday at 8am on Northland Morning.
