4/6 Community Conversations: Campus Safety

Flickr/Wolfram Burner

Since 1990, colleges and universities have been required by law to disclose campus safety information and also to take steps to keep students safe from sexual assault, stalking and dating violence.

When changes to strengthen the Clery Act nationally were finalized this fall, UMD's Dean of Students, Lisa Erwin, was one of the people responsible for developing those amendments.

Dr. Lisa Erwin and Lt. Sean Huls, UMD's Clery Act coordinator join us in the studio to talk about what UMD is doing to keep all students safe, programs already in place that put the University "ahead of the curve," and how the entire university community, including staff and faculty, are part of the effort to stop sexual violence.

BEST Party Model

Parties are mostly populated by well-intentioned men. These are men who respect and care about women, want them at parties, and want them to have a good time. Unfortunately, though, most well-intentioned men have deferred to the socially accepted party environment where men represent a continuous threat to women’s safety, comfort, and ability to have fun. That isn’t right. And it’s time for a change. The BEST Party Model normalizes a process for campus men to join women in taking responsibility for the process of preventing violence against women at parties.

“The Hunting Ground” Sneak Preview Film Showing

UMD will be showing a special sneak preview of The Hunting Ground. A startling exposé of the epidemic of sexual assaults on U.S. campuses, institutional cover-ups, and the brutal social toll the crimes take on survivors and their families. Like the student activists featured in the film, we all need to get involved in a big way. Talk about the issues. Organize an event. Take action. We need your help to ensure there is change at our colleges and universities. The opportunity is now.

Clothesline Project

The Clothesline Project is a visual display meant to raise awareness and bear witness to domestic violence, sexual assault/abuse and violence against women. Each shirt tells the story of a different survivors experience. T-shirts are made by survivors and those who care about them. The shirts you see displayed here have been made by people in your community and tell true stories of people you may know. Decorating a T-shirt gives survivors the power to use their voice and tell their story. Many victims find that this artistic way of raising awareness has helped heal them on their journey. Please take a moment to look at the clothesline and think about what we can do to end the suffering!

Lisa Johnson started her broadcast career anchoring the television news at her high school and spinning country music at KWWK/KOLM Radio in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a reporter and news anchor at KTHI in Fargo, ND (not to mention the host of a children's program called "Lisa's Lane") and a radio reporter and anchor in Moorhead, Bismarck, Wahpeton and Fergus Falls.Since 1991, she has hosted Northland Morning on KUMD. One of the best parts of her job includes "paying it forward" by mentoring upcoming journalists and broadcasters on the student news team that helps produce Northland Morning. She also loves introducing the different people she meets in her job to one another, helping to forge new "community connections" and partnerships.Lisa has amassed a book collection weighing over two tons, and she enjoys reading, photography, volunteering with Animal Allies Humane Society and fantasizing about farmland. She goes to bed at 8pm, long before her daughter, two cats, or three dogs.
